In the southern regions of Faerie, lies the Kingdom of the Elementals, a race of fairies who can trace their lineage all the way back to the Goddess Danu. The four daughters of the King, Elar Rásdual, were blessed with the power of the basic elements, a gift granted only every five millennia to four children of the reigning monarch. With such powers, the daughters grew to be ambassadors, not only for the Kingdom, but for the whole of Faerie. And all was well in the land until Gaia, the firstborn daughter of King Elar & Queen Mab, who had been granted the element of Earth, fell, heart and soul in love with a human mortal.
On hearing of this, the Kings roar was said to have been heard across the whole kingdom. No amount of pleading from her three sisters could alter Gaia’s decision to leave and renounce her immortality for the man she loved, Her father became enraged at this and ordered Gaia to be taken from his sight and to be imprisoned in the deepest and darkest oubliette (a form of dungeon which was accessible only from a hatch in a high ceiling). Whilst being led away, a single tear for her father fell on to the courtyard. And from this tear sprang a flowering tree, which from that day became known as the Tree of Sorrow.
In his rage, had the King forgotten that Gaia would welcome her prison?
For, as the ladder was raised and the light was taken away from her by the closing of the hatch, Gaia simply faded into the soil and began her journey to the world of mortals.
So began the adventure...
